Day Three (May 9, 1994)

I being the day at 6:45 AM with my homework assignment of watching AM Weather on TV, and getting the winds at 2000 ft. I watch the show (for the first time) but miss the winds. While grabbing a cup of coffee in the lobby, I overhear an elderly woman saying: "Someone's got some sort of big machine in their room. It looks like one of those old computers... they should ban those things; they're destroying the country."

No, I'm not making this up. I guess that GA is in more trouble than we think!

Today is not going well. We do some more VOR work and talk about NDBs; then after lunch we begin working on them. Try as I might, I can't seem to get the mental picture. When I finally do get it, John cranks in some crosswind, and I fall apart again. I barely get through some procedure turns, with his coaching, and we end the day with a review of my flight plan. He gives it a passing grade; all is okay, but not quite optimal. Some suggestions for improvement follow and I'm generally pleased; I've done okay, and I've learned some more. Tonight's homework: Review NDB maneuvers both on paper and the simulator, flight plan for Waterbury Oxford to Bedford (will this be the final leg of our cross-country?), and read the chapter on Holds, in anticipation of tomorrow.

Our session ends, and I set out on my bicycle (yes, you can fit one in the back of a Cherokee 140 if you try hard enough) in search of dinner. Lexington, where I am staying, is next to a wonderful bicycle path that was made from an abandoned railroad line. I bicycle about 5 miles toward downtown Boston and eventually ask someone where a good place to eat may be found. He replies 'try Lexington'. I ride back to the hotel. 3 pizzas in 3 days seems a bit much, so I chomp down a yogurt and get back to work. After reading and some more sim, I'm beginning to be able to make heads or tails out of this. I do my flight plan and go to bed about midnight.
